From the HIMSS 2012 conference in Las Vegas, Avnet announced this week that it is now authorized to distribute Oracle’s Health Sciences solutions in the U.S. and Canada, including Oracle’s Healthcare Information Exchange and Oracle Enterprise Healthcare Analytics solutions.

Based on Avnet’s proven ability to develop and foster an ecosystem of highly-skilled healthcare IT solution provider partners through its SolutionsPath® methodology and HealthPath® practice, Oracle’s Health Sciences has authorized Avnet to distribute these specialized solutions. Under this agreement, Avnet will support a uniquely qualified team of healthcare IT solution providers and enable them to solve the business challenges facing small and midsize hospitals related to accountable care, electronic health records (EHRs) and health information exchanges (HIEs).

    CRN announced this week that Jeff Bawol has been named one of CRN’s 2012 Channel Chiefs. This prestigious list of the most influential and powerful leaders in the IT channel recognizes those executives directly responsible for driving channel sales and growth within their organization, while evangelizing and defending the importance of the channel throughout the entire IT industry.

Avnet’s Mike Houghton, vice president, brand strategy, and more than 100 other IT channel executives were recently asked by Vertical Systems Reseller (VSR) magazine to describe the most important changes they expect to see in their part of the industry in 2012. Here's what Mike had to say about the changes he expects:

An increasing number of VARs will consider vertical market specialization in their long-term growth plans for 2012. There are many good reasons for VARs to focus their resources on targeted verticals, and most of them relate to the continuing desire from end users to work with trusted advisors.

It’s fair to assume that most business owners would welcome a solution provider’s efforts to get to know the pain points of their business; but in many vertical markets, that’s not enough. To specialize in a market, VARs need to “walk in the shoes” of the owner or CIO/CTO to truly understand the impediments to growth and be able to discuss solutions in the language of the customer organization. In many of the fastest-growing vertical IT markets—healthcare, government and education, retail, energy, and banking and financial services—knowing the organization’s structure, culture, plus the language of the industry and the regulations imposed on it are critical to building lasting relationships with the industry leaders who make purchasing decisions.

There are other elements that can directly impact the perception of a VAR as a trusted advisor. Topping the list is the need to stay current with new data center technologies, including cloud computing, “big data” analytics (the ability to analyze petabytes of structured and unstructured data at high velocity), the impacts of social media on sales and marketing, plus the increasing reliance on mobile computing. As new technologies and solution approaches emerge, VARs should incorporate them into their solutions advice where appropriate. Also, having access to a robust services bench that can implement the solutions at the level that satisfies the customer is vital.

Savvy VARs will look beyond the walls of their organizations in the coming year for partnership opportunities that can help them enter new vertical markets faster. This will accelerate their success at becoming a trusted advisor to their customers.

On Thursday, January 26, Avnet announced positive results for Q2 FY12. As a result of contributions made by both operating groups, Avnet, Inc.'s earnings per share exceeded its originally projected expectations and generated very strong cash flow from operations. Avnet CEO Rick Hamada stated that although the macro environment presented some top-line challenges, Avnet has adapted swiftly to the changes in market conditions, driving steady improvement across the business.

One of the largest healthcare conferences in the country is just a few short weeks away. The Health Information Management System Society Conference (HIMSS 2012) comes to life February 20-24 in Las Vegas. An estimated 50,000 attendees are expected at this annual event.
